What is a podcast trailer?

A podcast trailer is a quick taste of your show that encourages listeners to subscribe. It appears at the top of your feed on Spotify and Apple. Listeners have the opportunity to hear what the show is about before diving into full length episodes. The goal is to encourage the right people to listen to your show by talking about the transformation they’ll receive when they tune in.

How long is a podcast trailer?

Podcast trailers are anywhere from a minute to five minutes long. As long as you don’t go over five minutes, there isn’t a wrong length. The key is not using the wrong messaging. The wrong message will tank a trailer faster than your time-stamp.

Why do I need a trailer?

Every podcast platform (Apple, Spotify, Google) requires an episode for the show to go live on that platform. In order to “launch” we encourage hosts to record a trailer and use this audio in the platform submission process. When this is done, you are able to then get subscribers even in advance of episode one and launch stronger.

Use these prompts to write your script:

  1. Introduce the show

  2. Introduce the host (yourself)

  3. Let people know what to expect from future episodes

  4. Let people know how they’ll be changed by tuning in

  5. Lastly, ask listeners to “Subscribe to [show name] wherever you listen to podcasts.”
