Below is our single camera audio and video setup. We encourage hosts to use the Sony Alpha 7 III with one of the mic suggestions below to get seamless and high quality audio and video. This setup is ideal for small home-studio setups.

You’ll use the camera and audio in conjunction with a program like Zoom, Riverside.FM, or another recording program of your choice. For solo recording, you can technically record audio and video on the camera, but you’ll need an SD card and the camera itself only has so much storage. We encourage hooking up the camera to your laptop of desktop and recording audio/video from a program of your choice.

Affordable Podcast Audio

Shure Mv7

Shure SM7B Cardioid Dynamic Vocal Microphone

The SHURE MV7 is an affordable plug-and-play dynamic podcast mic. It’s our base recommendation. If you cannot get the Shure SM7B, get this. It’s great if you aren’t too tech-savvy. If you are Mac user, you’ll need the USB to USBC connect for your laptop or iPadPro. That’s right! It can used with an iPadPro, but if you get one of the Sony Alpha cams, it cannot.

Use Example: This mic is great for hosts who aren’t tech-savvy or cannot afford the Shure SM7B setup.

Classic Podcast Audio

The SHURE SM7B is our recommended podcasting mic. In this scenario, you’ll be using a recording program and using the camera as your video input and the SM7B as your audio input. Program might include Zoom, Riverside.FM, and more.

Use Example: This mic is the podcasting gold standard. Every major podcast uses the SHURE SM7B. Most hosts do not mind having this mic in their video as it’s the industry standard. The premium mic is part of the video aesthetic.

Lighting

Photography Lighting Kit, 27” x 20”

We recommend using this affordable lighting kit in conjunction with a ring light.

Use Example: Hosts place these lights on either side of their camera setup in order to create even lighting.
