Why Authority Matters for Authors, Consultants, and Thought Leaders

If you’re showing up online to sell a book, grow your consulting practice, or expand your influence, authority is everything. Authority is simply another word for trust. Without it, you’ll struggle to move people from a like or a follow into a sale, a client engagement, or a long-term relationship.

The question is: what kind of content actually builds that trust?

Content That Doesn’t Build Authority

Before we get into what works, let’s talk about what doesn’t:

  • Chasing vanity metrics. Likes, comments, and shares matter, but only when they’re coming from the right people. Ten engaged prospects who buy from you are worth far more than a thousand empty likes.

  • Performative content. Splashy stunts (jumping into pools in a wedding dress, mimicking viral trends) might get attention, but they rarely build credibility unless they align with your brand values.

  • Shiny objects. As business owners, we’re constantly bombarded with “quick fixes” that promise overnight results. But when we spread ourselves too thin chasing tactics, we lose sight of strategy… the thing that actually drives long-term growth.

The Three Keys to Authority-Building Content

So, what does build authority? It comes down to three things:

  1. Equip – Teach your audience something practical that helps them take their next step.

  2. Encourage – Remind them they’re not alone in their struggles and that solutions exist.

  3. Transform – Share insights or stories that shift perspectives and create real impact.

When your content consistently does these three things, you begin to serve your audience at scale and that’s what builds trust.

Examples of Content That Builds Trust

Authority-building content can take many forms:

  • Case studies that show the transformation you helped a client achieve. This could be a long-format podcast episode or YouTube video, or blog post.

  • Carousel posts on LinkedIn or Instagram that break down a problem into digestible insights.

  • Podcasts or YouTube videos that dive deeper into challenges and solutions.

  • Short-form videos (Reels, TikToks, Shorts) that creatively address a pain point and invite conversation.

It’s not about which medium you choose, it’s about whether your message equips, encourages, and transforms. Does it SERVE your audience?

Choosing the Right Platform and Format

Not sure what format to use? Start with where your audience is and what’s rewarded there:

  • If the platform favors video, make video.

  • If it favors graphics, create compelling visuals.

  • If short, snappy content performs, keep it brief and impactful.

Then, layer in your strategy. Even a 30-second clip can build authority if it shows you understand your audience’s struggles and care enough to help.

The ROI of Serving at Scale

Authority comes from being of service. When your content demonstrates care, clarity, and transformation, you’ll earn trust… whether 10 people engage or 10,000. And unlike gimmicks, this kind of content builds a long-term foundation for your brand.

Because here’s the truth: nobody cares about what you know until they know that you care.

Let’s Get Real

Authority isn’t about being the loudest voice online. It’s about being the most helpful. When you equip, encourage, and transform your audience, you’ll stand out not because you chased trends, but because you served with substance.
